Wheelchair-Accessible Coach Hire in Birmingham

Accessible group transport planned by Bouden Coach Travel in Birmingham

Wheelchair-accessible coach hire in Birmingham means the vehicle allocated to your job has a lift or ramp, a wheelchair space, and a driver who knows the boarding routine. It is a specific fleet type. It is not a standard coach with a helpful driver and a bit of extra time. If access is not on the enquiry, the vehicle that arrives may be the right size and still be the wrong vehicle.

Bouden operates PSVAR-compliant wheelchair-accessible vehicles. Ask for one when you request a quote, including for staff shuttles, school trips, weddings and days out. The detail below is how to brief it.

What PSVAR does and does not decide

The Public Service Vehicles Accessibility Regulations apply to vehicles designed to carry more than 22 passengers when they are used on local or scheduled services. Closed private hire is generally outside that. That legal point does not remove the practical need, and it does not remove an employer's duty to make reasonable adjustments under the Equality Act 2010.

So the useful question is not "does PSVAR force this booking?" It is "who is travelling, and what vehicle do they need?" We would rather specify an accessible vehicle at quote stage than try to change it the day before. The same point is covered for employers in our staff shuttle guide.

What to tell us

  • How many passengers use a wheelchair, and whether they transfer to a seat or stay in the chair.
  • Whether the chair is manual or powered. Powered chairs need a confirmed weight and size.
  • How much time boarding usually takes.
  • The pickup address, including steps, gravel, a loading bay or a car park height barrier.
  • The destination entrance. A museum step-free route is not the same as the coach bay.
  • Whether a companion is travelling in the wheelchair space area.

If you are unsure of the chair dimensions, send a photo and the make. A guess of "a normal wheelchair" is how a lift booking fails in a driveway.

Schools, weddings, shuttles and days out

JourneyWhat changes
School tripThe school books. Staff supervise. The accessible space is part of the pupil count, not an extra on top of a full coach.
WeddingCeremony and reception may have different entrances. Allow time so the guest is not rushed in front of a crowd.
Staff shuttleSpecify it in the contract so the same type of vehicle is on the rota, including early shifts.
Day trip or arenaCheck the venue's step-free route as well as the coach. We can only deliver to a place the vehicle can reach.

School bookings should also follow the school coach hire guide. Weddings should follow the wedding transport guide and still flag access separately. Specialist services is the right route if the job is unusual, medical or a one-off movement that does not fit a standard day trip.

Notice

Give as much notice as the rest of the booking, and do not leave access to a phone call the day before. Accessible vehicles are a smaller part of any fleet. June school trips, Saturday weddings and December parties are when they are already allocated. If your date is fixed, enquire when the date is fixed.

Boarding, in practice

Allow more time than a walking passenger needs. A lift or ramp, a restraint and a conversation with the passenger is several minutes, and it is longer in the rain or on a slope. If you have two wheelchair users, say so. Some vehicles take more than one chair. Some take one. We would rather price the right vehicle than discover the second chair at the kerb.

Tell us about the building as well as the chair. A step-free museum entrance that is a hundred metres from the coach bay is still a success if someone knows the route. A "level access" note that turns out to be three steps is not. If a carer is travelling, they need a seat. They are not an invisible extra.

On a staff shuttle, the accessible vehicle has to be the one on the rota, including the early shift, not a promise that we will swap if someone needs it. Put it in the contract. On a one-off wedding or school trip, put it on the enquiry the day you enquire.

Wheelchair access FAQs

Do you have wheelchair-accessible coaches in Birmingham?

Yes. PSVAR-compliant wheelchair-accessible vehicles are available. They have to be requested on the quote so the right vehicle is reserved.

Does every coach have a lift?

No. Standard coaches and minibuses are not all accessible. Assume nothing until the booking names an accessible vehicle.

Can a wheelchair user stay in their chair for the journey?

Often yes, in a dedicated space with the restraint system the vehicle is equipped with. Tell us if the passenger prefers to transfer to a seat. Powered chairs need size and weight confirmed.

Is this only for schools and employers?

No. Families, weddings, days out, airport groups and private bookings can all request an accessible vehicle. Employers have extra Equality Act duties. The vehicle request is the same.

What if the venue has steps?

Tell us. We can plan the vehicle and the boarding. We cannot remove a venue's steps. If there is a goods entrance or a step-free door, put that in the enquiry.
