Coach Hire from Birmingham to Alton Towers

Full-size coach suitable for a group trip from Birmingham to Alton Towers

Coach hire from Birmingham to Alton Towers is a there-and-back day trip to the resort near Alton in Staffordshire. From most of Birmingham it is about an hour to an hour and a half on the M6 and A50, before you add the time to get out of your own suburb and the time to unload at the coach park. One coach is almost always simpler than a convoy of cars, because the group arrives together and nobody is left circulating the car parks.

It sits inside the wider list of day trips from Birmingham by coach. This page is only the Towers, because that is the trip where departure time, school versus family, and coach parking decide whether the day works.

How long does the journey take?

Treat these as planning figures for a clear weekday outside the summer holiday peak. Add time in school holidays and on Saturdays.

Starting areaTypical running time to the resortPractical note
North Birmingham, Sutton Coldfield, Castle ValeAbout 1 hour to 1 hour 15Straightest run to the M6 north
City centre, Nechells, airport and NECAbout 1 hour 10 to 1 hour 25Allow longer if you thread the city first
Solihull, Hall Green, Kings HeathAbout 1 hour 20 to 1 hour 40You are joining the M6 or M42 from the south
Coventry and east WarwickshireOften similar to south BirminghamSend the pickup postcode rather than guessing

If the gates or your timed entry are at 10am, a south Birmingham school that boards at 8.30am is already hoping the M6 behaves. For a summer Saturday, leave earlier than the map suggests. The last half mile into the resort is slow when everyone else has the same idea.

School groups and family groups are different jobs

Schools need a visit leader, a headcount, DBS-checked drivers and a belt for every pupil. The booking should be in the school's name. Staff supervise. We drive. Read the school coach hire guide before you send the enquiry, and tell us if anyone needs a wheelchair space.

Families, football clubs and workplace groups are usually looser on supervision and tighter on the return. Adults will split up inside the park. That only works if the coach meeting point and the clock time are agreed before you go through the gate. "We will see how the queues are" is how 49 people miss a driver who is legally out of hours.

Use the coach park, not the car park

Alton Towers publishes access information for coaches, including a coach park and the walking route to the entrance. Do not plan to use the main guest car park, and do not assume a 49-seat coach can follow satnav into a hotel or a side entrance. When you enquire, say you need a coach, not a car, so we plan the right approach.

Height barriers on nearby overnight stops catch people who want the coach to wait at a hotel that was designed for cars. If the group is staying near the park rather than going home, send the hotel name before we quote. We will say if the vehicle fits.

Why one coach beats several cars

  • One arrival time, so the group starts together.
  • No need to find six cars' worth of parking on a peak day.
  • Pupils or juniors are not split across parent drivers with different ideas of "on time".
  • The return is one meeting point. Nobody is stranded because their driver went on a ride.

For a group under about 16, a minibus is often the right size and can be easier to place. Over that, a coach is usually better value per seat than two or three minibuses, provided everyone starts from one or two pickups. Cost ranges for a Birmingham day trip are in the price guide. A peak Saturday in the summer holidays is not the same price as a Tuesday in term time.

What to send us

  • Date, and whether tickets are already timed.
  • Pickup address and passenger numbers, with staff counted separately for schools.
  • The time you want to be at the coach park.
  • The time you want to leave the park.
  • Any wheelchair user, pushchairs or bulky bags.

Term time, holidays and the journey home

A Tuesday in term, with a school that can leave at 8am, is the straightforward version of this trip. A Saturday in the summer holidays is the version where the A50 and the resort roads are slow and every coach park is busy. If you have a choice, the weekday is the kinder day for pupils and for the driver. If the date is fixed, leave earlier than the map and do not promise a 9am first ride.

On the way home, pick the meeting point before you go through the gate. Staff should know it, and so should a pupil who gets split from the group. The coach will not tour the car parks. If the park stays open later than you hired, message us. An extra hour is sometimes possible and sometimes not, depending on the driver's hours and the next job. Agree it rather than assuming the vehicle is yours until the lights go off.

Families who want a softer day can leave later and accept a shorter time in the park. Schools who want a full day should be honest about the return time they can still supervise. A coach that gets back to south Birmingham at 7pm is a different duty from one that gets back at 9pm after a late ride.

Alton Towers coach hire FAQs

How far is Alton Towers from Birmingham by coach?

About an hour to an hour and a half from most of Birmingham, depending on the pickup and the traffic. North Birmingham is usually the quicker start. Add time to board and time to unload at the coach park.

What time should we leave Birmingham?

For a 10am start on a normal weekday, many north Birmingham groups leave between 8am and 8.30am. South Birmingham and school-holiday Saturdays should leave earlier. Tell us the entry time and we will propose a departure.

Can the coach stay all day?

Yes. A there-and-back day trip includes waiting while you are in the park, within the hours you have booked. The driver cannot always stay in the same bay the whole day. Agree the return meeting point before the group splits up.

Do you provide school trips to Alton Towers?

Yes. The school should make the booking. Drivers are DBS-checked, and you should confirm seatbelts for every pupil on the quote. Staff on the coach supervise the group.

Is a 16-seater enough?

For a family or a small club, yes. A school year group needs a midi or a standard coach. Do not squeeze extra pupils on. If the number is between two sizes, ask us to price both.
