Private coach hire from Birmingham to Liverpool, Manchester or London is a vehicle and driver reserved for your group, on the times you set, with the luggage you actually have. A scheduled coach, such as a National Express service, sells individual seats on a public timetable to a coach station. They answer different questions. If you searched "Birmingham to Liverpool coach" you may have been shown both. This article is only the private hire.
Location pages for the three cities are coach hire to Liverpool, coach hire to Manchester and coach hire to London. Day trips that are not these three cities are listed in day trips from Birmingham.
Private hire or a public coach seat?
| Private hire | Scheduled coach | |
|---|---|---|
| Who travels | Your group only | Anyone with a ticket |
| Where it stops | Your pickup and your destination | Coach stations and the published route |
| Luggage | Agreed for the group, including kit | A personal allowance |
| Time | You set departure and return | The timetable |
| Best for | Teams, schools, weddings, workplaces, match days with a plan | One or two people on a flexible ticket |
Private hire starts to make sense from about 10 to 15 people, and it is clearly the simpler option once you are past a minibus and into a coach. Below that, compare a minibus with a driver against train tickets before you assume a 49-seater is the answer.
Realistic times from Birmingham
These are road times for the vehicle, not boarding, and not a Friday afternoon promise.
- Liverpool. About two hours via the M6 for many Birmingham starts. Match days at Anfield or Goodison add road restrictions. Say if you are going to a stadium, a cruise terminal or the waterfront, because the drop is not the same place.
- Manchester. Often around one and three quarter to two and a half hours via the M6. Old Trafford, the Etihad, the AO Arena and the city centre are different drops. Name the one on the ticket.
- London. Often two and a half to three and a half hours, depending on whether you use the M40 or the M1 and on what the last miles into London are doing. A day trip needs an early start. A toilet on the coach matters. Name the venue. "London" is not a drop-off.
Indicative return prices for these three routes are already published in our coach hire price guide. Use them as a range, then ask for a quote on your times. Waiting at the destination is part of the price if the driver stays.
Luggage, kit and coming home
A theatre day is small bags. A sports tour is kits in the hold. A London weekend is a case each. Tell us which, because a full coach with a full hold is a loading time as well as a vehicle choice.
Agree the return before you leave Birmingham. For a match or a show, that means one meeting point and a time. For a city day, it means a coach park or a street the vehicle can actually use. Groups that rely on messaging the driver from three different pubs will miss the legal end of the driver's day.
Football and alcohol
Alcohol is prohibited by law on journeys to designated sporting events, and it is not permitted on our vehicles unless agreed in writing in any case. A Liverpool or Manchester away day should be planned as a transport job, with the supporter rules of the match, not as a rolling bar. We can refuse a passenger who is a risk to safety.

When a private coach is the wrong tool
Two people going to a meeting in Manchester should take the train or a car. A private coach earns its place when the group would otherwise be a line of tickets, a pile of kit, or a set of people who need to arrive together and leave together. A school that can use one scheduled coach seat per pupil, with no kit and no timed museum entry, may still be better on the public timetable. A school with instruments, a packed lunch and a gate time is not.
One-way hires are fine when the group is staying or flying. Say so. If you only book the outward journey, there is no vehicle at the other end at 10pm. Match-day returns in particular need to be on the quote, with the stand or the pub you are actually leaving from.
Route FAQs
Is a private coach the same as National Express?
No. National Express sells seats to the public on a timetable. A private coach is your group, your pickup and your time. You are hiring the vehicle.
How long is Birmingham to Liverpool by private coach?
About two hours from many Birmingham pickups via the M6, plus boarding. Match days take longer. Send the kick-off and the ground.
Can you do Birmingham to London and back in a day?
Yes, if you leave early and fix the return. Each way is often two and a half to three and a half hours. It is a long duty for the driver, so the times have to be agreed properly.
Do you wait while we are at the match or the show?
If waiting is on the booking, yes. If you only booked a one-way arrival, the vehicle will not be sitting there at the final whistle. Say which you need.
What about Manchester Airport or Heathrow?
Those are airport transfers with flight tracking, not city sightseeing. Use the Manchester Airport, Heathrow and other airport pages, and put the flight number on the enquiry.
